Maryland County Resources


Maryland has 23 counties and the city of Baltimore which makes up the 24 local jurisdiction in Maryland. Baltimore is mostly surrounded by the County of Baltimore but is separate. Many of Maryland counties got its names for relatives of the Barons Baltimore. Maryland Association of Counties is an organization that advocates county issues at the state government level. St. Mary's was Maryland's first county (1634).
Counties east of the Chesapeake Bay are known as the Eastern Shore.
Mount Savage in Allegany County was settled by Irish immigrants.
Kent county is the smallest in area.
The Old Order Amish live in St. Mary's County.
Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's counties are often called Southern Shore.
