Society and Cultures in Delaware

The Europeans first explored Delaware in the 16th century and found several groups of Native Americans. The Lenape was in the northern part of Delaware and the Nanticoke in the south. Other colonial settlers came from Maryland and Tula. Most of the free African-American families before the Revolution came from Maryland. The Delaware Historical Society is dedicated to the exploration, preservation and appreciation of Delaware history, heritage and culture.
